A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect. It's like a Change of Address form from the Postal Service.Reason to use 301 redirects is that your URLs maintain their link popularity

A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect. There are very few instances where this type of redirect should be used, but unfortunately it is the easiest to implement. The best reason to use a 302 redirect is to keep your ugly URLs from being indexed permanently by search engines.

The above replies are totally what you was asking for... but i'd like to add that the one that is permanent ( 301 ) must be used when you move domains, change article url (it must stay like that for 180 days for SEO purposes); 302 redirect is used for temporary redirect, by example, moving a post to editorial team review!

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".
